Appreciative Joy

Mudita Musing

Green tea leaves swirling
Warmth soothes arthritic fingers
Simple gratitude.

Mudita, one of the four brahma-viharas, is appreciative joy, an acknowledgment of our own happiness and the happiness and good fortune of others. It is an antidote to comparing mind and envy.

Mudita is that quality of mind that takes pleasure in the simple things like hot green tea in a beautiful cup that warms hands on a cold winter’s day. For an excellent talk on appreciative joy, I recommend Guy Armstrong’s Mudita: Practicing Joy and Gratitude.
