Insight Chicago’s beginning meditation class meets once a week for four weeks, with the option of a fifth class for those who wish. Each class lasts about one hour and focuses on one of the four applications of mindfulness (see below). As we progress, there will be more and more links made among the four applications.
By the end of the four or five classes, participants should have a good grasp of the techniques of meditation as taught by the Buddha, as well as a basic understanding of some of the core concepts of Buddhism.
The Buddha’s guidance on the practice of meditation is found in the Sattipathana Sutta. Translated from the Pali as the four applications or establishments of mindfulness (older translation: the four foundations of mindfulness), they are:
- Mindfulness of breath, body
- Mindfulness of feeling (feeling tone)
- Mindfulness of mind (thoughts, emotions)
- Mindfulness of mind-objects (mental/emotional state of the moment)
Mindfulness (Sati in Pali) is the careful attention to mental and physical processes, and a key ingredient of meditation. It is also one of the five spiritual faculties, one of the seven factors of enlightenment, and an aspect of the Noble Eightfold Path.
