Registration open for April 26th Retreat with Santikaro

Registration is now open for the Insight Chicago spring retreat with Santikaro. The retreat will be held from April 26th to April 29th at the Portiuncula Center for Prayer in Frankfort, IL.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Santikaro served in the Peace Corps in Thailand for over four years. He was ordained as a Theravada Bhikkhu in 1985 and spent most of his monastic life at Suan Mokkh. Santikaro lived with Ajahn Buddhadasa for nine years and became his primary translator. During this time he also led Dawn Kiam, a small monastic community for foreigners. He is the founder of Liberation Park, a modern expression of Buddhist practice, study, and social responsibility, located in rural southwestern Wisconsin.

Space is limited so early registration is highly recommended. If registration becomes full, there will be a waiting list for those who are still interested in attending. 2012 Retreat Calendar

The 2012 Insight Chicago Retreat Schedule has been finalized. We will be hosting the three following four-day, residential retreats:

April 26th – Spring Retreat with Santikaro
Sept 27th – Fall Retreat with Anushka Fernanopulle
Dec 29th – New Year’s Retreat with Andrew Getz

Registration details for each retreat will be announced shortly. In addition to retreats, Insight Chicago will also host a number of other events in 2012, including classes, study groups, and days of mindfulness. Check out our Calendar for full details as they become available.

Announcing Spring Beginning Mediation Class

In order to help people who are new to meditation, Insight Chicago offers a Beginning Meditation Class taught by experienced lay practitioners. The class is intended to cover the basic meditation instructions as the Buddha first taught them, along with some essential Buddhist concepts. Training sessions take an hour a week spread over four to five weeks. See the Beginning Meditation Class page for details.

While the fall class has already started, you can register for the spring class which starts March 29th, 2012, by contacting Ann (apleeds@sbcglobal.net).

Santikaro Unable to Make Oct 22 Day of Mindfulness

Wisconsin-based teacher Santikaro will be unable to make the Oct 22nd day of mindfulness sponsored by Lakeside Vipassana due to complications from his recent illness. Our thoughts go towards his speedy recovery.

The day of mindfulness will proceed as scheduled this Saturday, and a Dhamma talk will be played that Santikaro has recorded for the occasion.

Announcing Fox Valley Insight Sitting Group

The Elgin Insight Meditation group in the western suburbs of Chicago has been relaunched as Fox Valley Insight. Instead of weekly sits, this group will hold monthly days of mindfulness lead by Deb Wright, graduate of the Advanced Study and Practice Program at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and long time dhamma practitioner.

Fox Valley Insight offers monthly full and half day practice days. The days are mostly kept in silence with alternate sitting and movement meditation periods. In addition to meditation, there is usually a question-and-answer session and a dharma talk about the Buddha’s teachings. Scheduled extended practice days are listed here and are offered with three options: morning only (9:00 – noon), afternoon only (1:00 – 4:00), or full day (9:00 – 4:00).
