Announcing Fox Valley Insight Sitting Group

The Elgin Insight Meditation group in the western suburbs of Chicago has been relaunched as Fox Valley Insight. Instead of weekly sits, this group will hold monthly days of mindfulness lead by Deb Wright, graduate of the Advanced Study and Practice Program at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and long time dhamma practitioner.

Fox Valley Insight offers monthly full and half day practice days. The days are mostly kept in silence with alternate sitting and movement meditation periods. In addition to meditation, there is usually a question-and-answer session and a dharma talk about the Buddha’s teachings. Scheduled extended practice days are listed here and are offered with three options: morning only (9:00 – noon), afternoon only (1:00 – 4:00), or full day (9:00 – 4:00). Elgin Insight Meditation Group Suspended

Local dhamma leader Deb Wright’s husband is recovering from back surgery. While he heals, the Elgin Insight Meditation group will not be meeting. Additional details will be posted if and when they are able to start up again. Please join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.

New North Chicago Sitting Group Starting Oct 20

A new Insight Chicago sitting group is forming in Lakeview near Belmont and Southport on Wednesdays from 7-9pm. The first sit will be October 20, 2010. Ravenswood Sitting Location on Hiatus

The Ravenswood sitting group has decided to move from its current location. They will not be meeting this summer while they look for a new space. The last sit at this location will be this Monday, May 24th. New locations are being looked for, and any offers of space on the north side of Chicago would be appreciated.

Sangha Business Meeting Oct 24

An Insight Chicago sangha business meeting will be held Saturday Oct 24th from 9:30am to 11:30am. Committed practitioners who have time to help with board activities are invited to join. Please contact Greg (glg222(at)gmail.com) to RSVP.

Our agenda for this meeting will focus on how best to take advantage of Santikaro’s proposal for a 2010 teaching schedule. We need to decide on topics for his discussions and find resources to organize and host the events.

Cheri Maples visits Insight Chicago Oct 26, 27

Teacher Cheri Maples will be visiting our weekly sitting groups – Monday October 26 at the Ravenswood location (brad.potts1(at)gmail.com) and Tuesday October 27 at the Downtown-Lakeside (glg222(at)gmail.com) location. The sits will start promptly at 7:00 pm. Please try to arrive a few minutes early. All are welcome.

Cheri runs the Center for Mindfulness and Justice. She leads mindfulness retreats and classes and efforts on how to incorporate timebanking with prison education and reintegration. In 2008, Cheri Maples was ordained as a Dharma Teacher by Zen master & peace activist, Thich Nhat Hanh.

Santikaro visits Chicago Oct. 18th

Santikaro will be visiting the Lakeside Sangha again on Oct. 18th. The sit begins at 6:30 pm. followed by a Dharma talk, tea break and question-answer period. The evening will end no later than 8:30 pm.

Space is limited, so please RSVP in advance with Greg Gerber at glg222(at)gmail.com if you plan to attend. Greg will provide location and directions.

There will be no third sunday sit at the Ravenswood location that day.
